We spent this weekend with my sister and her family in West Wales. It was a bit of a spur of the moment trip but it was just the antidote to the week we had last week. Marto spent the first half of the week in Italy and then before he got back, I had to head to a work conference in Newport, South Wales. I took the Friday off work and headed further West after the conference and Marto hired a car and he and Pip joined me on Friday evening.
We were taking part in the #MorrisonsMum campaign with Britmums and part of this was obviously that we had to shop in a Morrisons. Step forward one trip across the Preselis to find a Morrisons.
Instead of spending the money on a weekly shop, we decided to spend our money on food for the weekend for all six of us, including for several picnics, two evening meals, breakfasts and a barbecue with some of my sister’s friends on the Sunday night. We don’t usually buy our vegetables or meat from a supermarket so it was a bit of an experiment to buy everything from the same shop.
We started the weekend with bacon and pancakes, which Pip helped to make (recipe at bottom if you’d like to make some too).
On the Saturday afternoon, we headed to a local waterfall. My brother-in-law thought this would make a good picnic spot, not least because it is pretty much locals only, so really quiet. The friends that joined us told me that the plunge pool at the foot of the waterfall is said to be bottomless and legend has it that it is the entrance to hades. We didn’t investigate but it did make rather a peaceful spot to spend an afternoon.

including ham and cheese sandwiches on tigerbread, chorizo, tomatoes, apple pies and gin-men (gingerbread men) washed down with cups of tea, whilst Pip grubbed in the water, some of the boys built a dam and then swinging on the rope swings. Some of us may have required a change of clothes…
We headed back to the cars via a longer obstacle course walk.
Before heading home to baths, spaghetti bolognese and strawberries and cream.
On Sunday we headed back out armed with more food. First stop the sailing club for another picnic followed by some crabbing from the pontoon. Pip loved this and was delighted with our catch. Turns out the crabs also loved Morrisons bacon (as they were caught using a leftover rasher from our bacon & pancake breakfast).
and then went to the beach proper to catch the evening sunlight once the sun came out late afternoon.
We rounded the weekend off with a barbecue; we bought burgers and sausages for the meat eaters and as the party also comprised a number of vegans and vegetarians we also made up lots of skewers of varying kinds. We drank Pimms and sat around the chiminea before retiring inside to drink tea and play a game of Cards Against Humanity around the wood burner whilst the children slept. I also ended up having a bath with Pip as she was covered in sand and salt water and getting in with her was the easiest way to bathe her in a strange house. Felt a little odd heading to their bathroom with our rucksack of towels and bath wash, even if it was with their full permission!
American Pankcakes – makes enough for 4 hungry adults & a toddler
3 large eggs
45g plain flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
140ml milk
pinch of salt
oil/butter for frying
extra butter for serving
bacon
maple syrup
separate egg whites and place aside
mix yolks, flour, milk and baking powder until smooth
whisk whites until stiff and fold into batter
fry in frying pan over medium hot heat, using a ladle to pour a few tablespoons full at a time.
(tip – place a serving dish in a warm oven and add pancakes as they are cooked)
serve in stacks with butter between the layers, bacon on the side and maple syrup poured over.
cost per serving: roughly 25p (plus cost of bacon at £2.99).

It sure looks pretty for the entrance to Hades. The barbecue at the beach sounds amazing, I’d love to do that and crabbing too. I’ve seen people crabbing but never had a go.

Pancakes are the best breakfast in the whole wide world in my opinion. Great you had such a lovely bank holiday.
