Pip’s play kitchen… update one

The eagle eyed among you might have noticed that I have been busy(?) pinning play kitchens on to my “For Pip” board on Pinterest. originally intended as a Christmas present, before we ran out of time, this is now hopefully going to be a “moving to the new house” present.

So far, I have managed stage 1, which is to acquire an old bedside table to use as the basis for the kitchen and stage 2, which is to choose the colour and acquire the paint.

This is my favourite of all the inspiration pictures so far (sorry, having difficulty embedding the widget so you will have to click the link instead). I adore the colour and the styling. There’s no way Pip’s is going to end up like this, but I can dream.

Now, I haven’t actually got so far as painting yet, however,the paint came from my favourite interiors shop, Sally Bourne Interiors, in Muswell Hill. I love this shop and the majority of the presents I buy come from there, including all the natural handmade candles which I love giving to people (and burning in my own house; I think I am slightly obsessed). (Don’t worry if you don’t live in North London – they have an online shop!) The actual shop in Muswell Hill is full of all sorts of interesting vintage finds, gifts and interiors stuff as well as cards, wrappings, ribbons in addition to paint, wallpaper etc. I don’t think I ever walk past without going in.

 

Much as I love the eau de nil kitchen above, I didn’t want to copy it (probably because mine won’t look anywhere near so good), so I went for my favourite of the Annie Sloan chalk paints instead, in Duck Egg blue. I was really taken with the idea of this paint. You don’t have to prime or sand first and you can paint on just about any surface with it. You then put wax over it to seal. I’ve got a 1 litre tin and a pot of wax and a 1 inch brush, which I hope will be sufficient. I also have a sample pot of The Little Greene paint company’s grey paint which I will use for the trivets and knobs.

The next stage, of course, once it is painted, is to acquire some trivets and so on. I think I am going to make this part into an oven and then my Dad is going to do a sink part to go with it. The slight downside at the moment is that it has drawers rather than a door, so perhaps’s Pip’s oven will have a proving drawer and a baking drawer? Or maybe I will remove the drawers and add a chipboard door instead…

I have already collected several vintage pans and a teapot, and we have a tea set and a whole basket of veg. Once the painting and door issue is fixed, I will need to collect some accessories to finish.
