following on from this morning’s cloth nappies update post, if you are interested in using cloth nappies, here’s a few things that you will need:
. I think 12 nappies is about the minimum you can get away with if you plan to use them exclusively. otherwise, as many or as few as you can lay your hands on. we simply kept an eye out on freecycle and then a friend offered us a load too. I have no comment to make on how to choose a brand as we didn’t have a say, just accepted whatever came our way. If you are buying your own, I recommend the Nappy Lady, who has a questionnaire and then offers tailored brand advice.
(all links to the exact products that we have)
. Nappy bucket (you need the lid)
. Tots Bots Mesh Laundry Bag (we have two – one goes into the wash with the nappies, the other gets put in the bucket) I like the elastic at the top which makes it easy to stretch around the top of the bucket.
. wet bag for transporting nappies (which we now use as sponge bag) We have the owl print one.
. Napisan (add a scoop to each load – kills germs etc) and use non-bio liquid.
. flushable liners we didn’t choose these – simply a friend gave me a box of 10 rolls. I fold them to make them narrower.
optional:
. washable wipes (we bought a kit which comes with wipes, tubs, bags and essential oils) I’m sure you won’t be so clumsy but when Pip was a few weeks old and I was refilling the clean wipes box with water, I dropped it in the sink and the lid snapped off. I keep meaning to get a new lid or working box but I haven’t. I also don’t think they are quite so quick and easy to use as their website suggests, although I do like them. The lids on the box can’t go back beyond 90 degrees, so they are a little fragile. They require filling with water and oil etc. Not that any of that isn’t quite easy or straightforward, but I did find it a little much when Pip was a new born, especially as we used the whole box in one day. Newborns require A LOT of changing.
please do ask if you have any more questions.
